Ferdinand Ries: Flute Quartets, Op. 145 |
Ferdinand Ries was a remarkable composer whose work is too little known today. He suffers from standing too close to Beethoven and the most severe criticism that can be leveled against his music is that it sounds too much like Beethoven, as if such a thing could possibly be a handicap. Presented here are Ries's Three Flute Quartets, Op. 145, which are performed by Quarteto Raro on original instruments. The performers are: Laura Pontecorvo, flute; Alessandro Tampieri, violin; Diego Mecca, viola; and Andrea Fossa, cello.

Maestri di Cappella |
This CD is titled I Maestri di Cappella de Duomo di Sassari and presents three works by two rarely heard Italian composers of the Classical Era, Domenico Sigismondi and Francesco Vegni. Two selections, the Kyrie and Gloria are presented from Sigismondi's Messa in La Maggiore for two tenors, baritone and orchestra. Two choral works by Vegni, a piece marked Inno and a Cantata are beautifully performed by the Corale Antonio Vivaldi and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Sassari under the able direction of Daniele Manca. This CD is a marvelous glimpse into the kind of Classical music being made in Italy by contemporaries of Beethoven.

Luciano Simoni: Symphony No. 3 and St. Paul Hymni |
Luciano Simoni is a contemporary Italian composer. His Third Symphony, Op. 41, written in 1986-7, is his longest and most important symphonic work. It is presented here with a Contata St. Paul Hymni, Op. 44 featuring Kiss Domokos, tenor. Both works are performed by the Targu-Mures Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Romeo Rimbu and are World Premiere recordings. The test used for the Hymni is derived from parts of the letters of St. Paul and resonates with deep speritual meaning.

This interesting CD contains works by the more famous Ferdinando Carulli (1770-1841) and his less well known Italian contemporaries: Giacomo Monzino (1772-1845), Cesare Ciardi (1818-1877) and the late 18th century composer Giuseppe Anelli. The works presented are all Duets for Flute, Harp or Guitar performed by Maurizio Bignardelli, flute; Annamaria Palombini, harp and Massimo Agostinelli or Roberto Vallini on the guitar. This CD is a fascinating listen; it is a glimpse into music enjoyed in cultivated Italian homes in the 19th century.
